About Us

Specialist Gender Healthcare

Northern Gender Network is a multidisciplinary service providing specialist assessment, therapy, medical care and professional consultation relating to gender identity and gender-related healthcare.

We work with adults seeking support with questions of gender identity, gender incongruence, gender dysphoria, social transition, hormone treatment, surgery, psychological wellbeing and related aspects of health and wellbeing. We also provide consultation, supervision and training to healthcare professionals and organisations.

Our clinicians bring together expertise from psychology, psychosexual therapy, medicine and allied health professions. This multidisciplinary approach allows us to offer thoughtful, individualised care that recognises the complexity and diversity of people’s experiences.

Northern Gender Network

Our Approach

Questions of gender identity are often deeply personal and can be associated with a wide range of experiences, hopes, uncertainties and challenges. We believe that high-quality healthcare requires curiosity, openness and careful clinical thinking rather than assumptions or predetermined outcomes.

Our role is not to direct individuals towards any particular path, but to help them understand themselves more fully and make informed decisions about their lives and healthcare. For some people this may involve social transition, hormone treatment or surgery. For others it may involve psychological exploration, support, reflection or a different understanding of their experiences. We recognise that there is no single pathway through gender-related healthcare.

We are committed to providing care that is respectful, evidence-informed and responsive to the needs of each individual.

Clinical Excellence

Northern Gender Network was established to provide access to experienced clinicians with recognised expertise in gender healthcare. Our team includes clinicians who have worked within NHS gender services, specialist psychological services, psychosexual therapy services and related areas of healthcare.

We place a strong emphasis on clinical governance, ethical practice, professional development and multidisciplinary working. Clinical decisions are informed by current evidence, professional standards and the individual circumstances of each person seeking support.

Beyond Gender

Gender identity does not exist in isolation from the rest of a person’s life. Psychological wellbeing, relationships, sexuality, neurodiversity, physical health, culture, family experiences and social circumstances can all influence how people understand themselves and their needs.

For this reason, our assessments and therapeutic work seek to understand the whole person rather than focusing solely on gender-related concerns. We believe that a comprehensive understanding of an individual’s experiences provides the strongest foundation for meaningful and effective care.

Education, Consultation and Professional Support

In addition to direct clinical work, Northern Gender Network provides education, training, supervision and consultation to healthcare professionals, organisations and services.

Our clinicians have extensive experience teaching and training within healthcare, higher education and professional settings. We are committed to supporting the development of thoughtful, ethical and evidence-informed practice within gender healthcare and related fields.
